1946 Noguchi Freeform Sofa
While Isamu Noguchi is better known for the iconic coffee table that bears his name, he produced a vast number of designs for Herman Miller, all of which bear his signature aesthetic: a combination of mid-century modernism, and an organic sculptural quality.
One such example is the Noguchi Freeform Sofa, from 1946. Designed to make a visual statement, the freeform sofa was a large, but light and organic; a flowing piece, that was carefully sculpted, to live up to its "Freeform' tag. Each curve is perfectly formed, reminiscent of the flat rounded river stones that inspired it, showing Noguchi's finesse as a sculptor. But his choice of fabrics, colors, and the minimal padding showcase his design sensibilities as well, keeping the entire structure light and fresh. It blends into any room or interior, but stands out just enough to make a statement. When combined with the matching ottoman, the Freeform Sofa makes for a stunning focal point.
The Freeform sofa was produced in only limited quantities by Herman Miller in 1950. Those original pieces can fetch record prices in auctions. In 2002, however, Vitra picked up the design, and gave it a new lease of life, in a production run that continues to this day, showing us how great design, can truly, be timeless.
